Top handle bags have long been a staple of the style set, lending a polished, ladylike feel to any look. From Grace Kelly‘s eponymous Hermès bag to Gucci’s beloved bamboo style, the top handle bag is a certified classic.
But as of late, these structured purses have been reappearing with some seriously cool updates.
On the runways this past season, Alessandro Michele sent floral, granny-chic reiterations of the classic Gucci bamboo down the catwalk, while Nicholas Ghesquière‘s glossy, boxy versions at Louis Vuitton sent our hearts a-flutter.
Likewise, the street-style scene showed top-handle bags playfully reimagined with unexpected materials and irreverent details—a painted wooden cigar box bag from Dolce & Gabbana, suede fringe on Proenza Schouler’s PS1, and a slender metal bar replacing the standard handle atop the M2Malletier bags, for example.
