I woke up this morning to rumors swirling that Taylor Swift is planning to have her 26th birthday on Hamilton Island, Australia. Apparently she’s flying in her squad (Karlie, Selena, Gigi, etc.) and her boyfriend, Calvin Harris, plus pals like Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, and has even reportedly kicked media off the island to ensure their privacy. Sounds like quite the party.
Swift is staying on the island now, and she posted on Instagram yesterday to thank Hamilton Island for its hospitality to her and her crew. “So stoked to be able to take my band and crew on a vacation at the end of a long and wonderful tour. For all their hard work this year, they really deserve it,” she captioned a photo of her team. Her actual birthday is December 13—just over one week away.
As an Australian, I feel like it’s my duty to clue you in on just how epic Hamilton Island is and how this little celebratory vacay will probably play out.
First up, let’s put this into perspective: Australia has the best beaches in the world (no bias, guys; it’s just a fact), and Hamilton Island is the country’s crown jewel, beachwise. It’s privately owned and part of the Whitsundays, a group of islands off the East Coast of Australia that are so beautiful they’ll hurt your eyes. It’s positioned on the world-famous Great Barrier Reef. There’s white sand. There’s crystal-clear water. There’s beautiful sea life. It’s bordering on ridiculous. If perfect weather and perfect beaches are your jam, this place is basically heaven.
Hamilton Island is a favorite among wealthy Australian families and young honeymooners splurging on something extravagant. It also happens to be incredibly expensive, with accommodation easily clocking in at over $4,000 per person for a night’s stay this time of year.
Aside from the partying (of which we assume there will be lots), Tay’s squad will probably spend a lot of time snorkeling on the reef, or they could hire a sailboat to explore nearby islands, take a seaplane/hot air balloon/helicopter tour, or relax at the resort—which is obviously Qualia, because that’s where the rich people hang out.
Personally, I’m torn between wanting to unfollow T-Swift and co. right now (to avoid the inevitable FOMO that’s about to consume all of her followers) and spending my savings on a plane ticket to the Whitsundays right now. Tay, can I come to your birthday party too?
