Denim is the great unifier: no matter what your style, budget, or daily routine, odds are good you have at least a bit of it in your wardrobe. With this in mind, we asked six editors to pick their favorite piece for spring—whether that was a well-loved pair of Gap jeans, a pair of on-trend flared overalls, or a chambray bandeau dress—and style it as they would in real life, using items from their own closets. Since our team includes both denim devotees and at least one resolute jean opponent, the results were enlightening—while we may have all been in the same material, no one looked the least bit uniform.

Read on to see the denim styles we’re loving most this spring, and shop our editors’ picks.

"I'm still not sick of the mom-jean trend, especially for spring. A super-high waist, thick no-stretch denim, and tapered ankle-grazing legs aren't always the most flattering characteristics, but somehow they all work with tucked-in tees, sleeveless turtlenecks, or cropped blouses (like this Gracia shirt with ruffled sleeves.) The pair pictured was a lucky Etsy find—Guess from the early '90s—but pretty much every store carries their own version, from the vintage Levi's at Aritizia to the crazy-retro cuts at Topshop." "My aversion to denim is well-documented, however I will make an exception for this chambray dress. Anytime I wear it, at least one person asks me where I bought it (an Australia online store, thanks for asking), and I’m a big fan of the midriff cutouts. I'll style it on the weekend with a straw panama hat and tan sandals, and have been known to wear it to work with ankle boots."

"This jumpsuit is a recent purchase (from Free People—on sale!) but already I have an inkling it'll be on regular rotation this season. Cropped wide-leg pants have been my go-to silhouette for a while now, and finding them in denim onesie form has taken it to a whole new level. For now, I'm wearing it layered with a tank and a jacket, but when summer hits, I'll throw it over a bathing suit as an easy all-in-one outfit."

"This spring, I’ve been on the hunt for wide-leg overalls. There’s nothing more flattering or leg-lengthening than wearing a wide pant leg with a good heel, and the silhouette is definitely on-trend with this season’s affinity for all things ‘70s. I also love a good pair of overalls—the right cut looks chic and playful, as opposed to twee."

Tavie Flare Overall, $279; at Paige / Flea Market Flare Overalls, $158; at Madewell / Stella McCartney Denim Overalls, $845; at Shopbop / Frame Le High Cropped Denim Overalls, $330; at Net-A-Porter / 1969 Denim Flare Overalls, $53.97; at Gap

"I’ve had this jacket for God knows how long—it has been multiple years. Six? Seven? One of those, maybe. It was on sale at Gap in a size XL, and despite being a firm S, I bought it anyway. It’s my go-to throughout spring and summer, and I’ve been known to wear it under heavier coats the rest of the year, too. I’ve looked far and wide for a similar style that isn’t as ill-fitting and, well, old, to no avail."

"Finding jeans to fit my 6’1” frame is never easy, so when I get my hands on a pair that fit, I keep them forever. Even if they rip at the knee; even if they rip at the inner thigh; even if I’d had them since high school. Such is the case with this pair from the Gap. They weren’t purchased distressed, but have become so after years of wear. Still, I love them, and plan to yet again incorporate them into my spring wardrobe. When eyeing new denim purchases, I’m currently most enticed by similar styles: casual, ripped, and in classic blue jean shades."
