When Proenza Schouler sent models down the runway during its Fall 2016 show, it was hard not to notice the amount of bags with short, chunky chains that were worn crossbody-style—almost like a quasi-necklace. Prada, too, debuted a selection of messenger bags that hit above the hip; typically a length that we’d relegate to that of supreme awkwardness in the past.

The crossbody is already a pretty great wardrobe staple in our minds—it’s cute and functional, and it allows you to keep your hands free—so it comes as no surprise that street-style stars spanning from New York to Paris have picked up on the trend.

If you’re feeling the look, lots of typical strap-across bags have adjustable straps, so if you already own one, just shorten it and you’re good to go.
