Here’s the First Trailer for the Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie, ‘Rogue One’

If you’re counting down the day until the follow-up to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” arrives in 2017, then take comfort in the fact that a different “Star Wars” spinoff will be hitting the silver screen this December—and the trailer just dropped.

While there’s plenty of typical “Star Wars” fare to get excited about in the trailer (Storm troopers! The Death Star! Forest Whitaker!), perhaps the most exciting is the franchise choosing to go with a female lead, with Felicity Jones taking on the role of a resistance fighter, leading a pack of rebels to take the Death Star.

The movie is set to occupy the space between the prequel films and the original series, but it’s reportedly the first movie in the franchise without a Jedi in it—whether or not the storylines will intersect with “Star Wars” plots past and present is yet to be seen. Jones will be joined onscreen by Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk. “Rogue One” is directed by Gareth Edwards.
