Ever see interior snaps on Instagram and all of a sudden get filled with #instaenvy? Designer Angela Belt knows how you feel, so she gives her seven steps to ensure your living room is ready for its close-up.
To ensure that your living room is #instagramready, it all comes down to the details. Simply purchasing furniture for your living room is only the first step to designing a room that everyone daydreams about.
You know the rooms I’m talking about … those living rooms that have thousands of likes on Homepolish’s feed every day. Well, I’m going to let you in on a few designer secrets to make sure that the next time you take a photo of your living room, you are going to get a whole lot of hearts on your Instagram feed.
1. FIND AN AREA RUG
An area rug is what anchors a room, so it’s the most important accessory in a well-designed living room to tie everything together. When it comes to selecting a rug for your space, it’s important to make sure the design of the rug doesn’t overpower the rest of the room.
The rug can either be the focal point in the room with lots of colors and pattern, or it can be understated with a neutral color palette and subtle pattern. Either option can play well with other elements in the room, as long as you know how to work in the color scheme. Take Jennifer Talbot’s daring work for Jenica Myszkowski in Chicago.
2. INVEST IN SOME ART
Making sure you have a statement piece of artwork, a frame story, or even a mirror can make a big difference in a room. It can be intimidating to select the right artwork or even to configure the exact layout on your wall.
When in doubt, hang a simple grid frame wall. You will never go wrong with this layout. Once you have your grid laid out, simply select images you love, and you’re done! Even the fanciest designers stick to this basic trick, as you can see in Louisa Roeder’s Brooklyn brownstone. Whatever you do, don’t leave the walls bare and all alone.
3. DON’T FORGET WINDOW TREATMENTS
So. Oftentimes people ignore their windows. It seems to often be the last thing in the design process, because to truly do it right, you may need to invest more time and money than you budgeted for. But it’s worth it!
Adding statement window treatments to a living room can rejuvenate a space, not to mention they help to insulate a room. And it creates that photogenic diffused light look. I mean, just take a look at this home by designer Nina Jizhar, and tell me you don’t swoon over those curtains!
4. HIGHLIGHT SOME LIGHTING
Nine times out of ten, the existing light in your place isn’t doing the room justice because the lighting is inadequate or the aesthetics of the light fixture leave a lot to be desired. Invest in lighting your living room with the right fixtures from overhead pendants, floor and table lamps, accent lights, or even fancy bejeweled chandeliers (as seen in Paige Morse’s Dallas home).
Adding accessories to the room like pillows, vases, and objects that mean something to you is really important. You should consider these accessories the jewelry in the room that add some bling to the space. These pieces allow you to put your personal stamp on the living room.
You can see in Kelli Lamb’s California home by Haley Weidenbaum that you can add in plenty of accessories without overpowering the space. No one wants a hoarder on their hands!
6. GET SOME FUNKY ACCENT CHAIRS
Selecting the right accent chair for the room is another opportunity to infuse your style into the space. The sofa might be the safe large-scale piece in the room, but the accent chairs do not need to the follow the same rules.
Whether you go decide to go with a vintage piece or buy a new chair, consider selecting chairs that have an interesting shape and put them in pairs, or mix and match chairs for an eccentric twist. Homepolish’s Savannah Metcalf was a pro at sourcing beautiful midcentury Eames and Bertoia chairs for her Oakland home.
7. LAYER AWAY
Now is a great time to flaunt your book collection and stack it up. Your coffee table should have curated layers of books, flowers, and items that express your style. Also, add a tray to the coffee table. You can use it later for entertaining, and trays can help organize your objects. Leave it to a magazine editor to embrace curated layers in his NYC apartment.
These staple pieces of advice are what every room needs to consistently become a showstopper. It’s guaranteed to land your room at the top of people’s Instagram feeds time and time again.
