Up until now, we’ve been getting by just fine with super-light blazers and thin sweaters, but there’s no denying that it’s just about time to break out the big guns: the winter coat.

The right one can be a lifesaver in cold weather, not only because it keeps you warm, but also because it provides a one-piece fashion solution that you can throw over any ensemble (even pj’s) and look like a million bucks. This season, we’re particularly feeling a classic peacoat.

A little bit of fashion history for you: Originally favored by European sailors and members of the American Navy, peacoats were worn as early as the 1720s, and when it comes to the style’s silhouette, modern versions are almost identical to the ones produced back then—heavy wool, wide lapels, large buttons, and slash pockets.

Here, we’ve rounded up 10 to shop now across all price points, from fast-fashion versions to designer styles that are absolutely worth the splurge. These guys have stuck around for over two centuries, so it’s a safe bet they’re not going anywhere.
