Off-the-shoulder sweaters are the kind of garment that shouldn’t make sense. On the one hand, they’re ostensibly supposed to keep you warm, and on the other, you’re baring a good portion of your upper body to the elements. But fashion doesn’t always follow logic, and as it turns out, the style is way more practical than you might expect.
I’ll admit—I was skeptical at first. But my friend Ellpetha, an actor and stylist, bought one a few weeks ago, and contends that it’s the most versatile piece she’s bought this spring. “It doesn’t hold the same social connotations as a low-cut top or a short skirt,” she says. “You can wear super conservatively, like to a political event, or on a date.” One other bonus? You get to be cozy, too—perfect for in-between weather where it’s still to chilly to break out that señorita top. And unlike backless styles, you can actually wear a bra with it.
These aren’t the Flashdance-style sweatshirts, either—in knit, they’re a little more sophisticated, whether worn long and slouchy (great with a pair of skinny jeans) or cropped and fitted (ideal for a high-waisted skirt).
