While a slew of stars and starlets were preening on the red carpet at the Oscars, Michelle Obama was hosting her first black-tie dinner at the White House to welcome the National Governors Association. She chose a deep purple, almost-black glittering strapless gown by another young American designer (she seems to have a penchant for the young Americans–Thakoon, Jason Wu, etc.), Peter Soronen. Soronen’s line is just over a year old, with his first NYC runway debut having occured in fall 2007.
