The annual Met Gala is a big deal in every way possible—it’s known as the Oscars of Fashion. And part of the appeal is seeing how every A-list attendee interprets the night’s theme, which is pegged to the exhibit that the gala will fete. On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed the 2016 theme will be an especially relevant one: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”
“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made,” said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met’s Costume Institute. “But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.”
We can probably expect plenty of “futuristic” interpretations of the theme, and—we’re betting—more than a few selfie sticks, which don’t play into the man-versus-machine theme per se, but last year’s guest list featured a staggering number of Instagram It girls (Kim, Kendall, and Gigi among them), so guests might have fun with the word technology.
The 2016 Met Gala will be held on Monday, May 2, and will be hosted and cochaired by Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, Taylor Swift, and Anna Wintour. Designers Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquière, and Miuccia Prada will serve as honorary chairs.
