For her next role, Australian actress Margot Robbie is set to play one of the most infamous athletes in American history, figure skater Tonya Harding. Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news today that Robbie, 25, will tackle the lead in “I, Tonya.”
For the uninitiated, Harding’s promising career imploded after her ex-husband and bodyguard hired a man to attack fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan ahead of the 1994 Winter Olympics. The scandal went down in history (though Kerrigan still snagged silver at the games) and Harding was banned from the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life. You can still watch the aftermath of the attack online.
No other casting has been announced for the upcoming film, but Deadline reports Robbie is looking for a director and plans to “build this project around herself.” Tonya, herself, and her ex Jeff Gillooly gave exclusive interviews to the movie’s screenwriter Steven Rogers—which should add an interesting element to the scandalous story.
Let the conversation about who should play Kerrigan begin. (Our vote definitely goes to Anne Hathaway.)
