We all have a few old photos from our teenage years lying around in an attic or basement somewhere, but most of us never have to worry about such pics turning up on live TV. Not so for Margot Robbie, whose much dorkier 13-year-old self appeared on a gigantic screen behind her as she paid a visit to Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night.
“Literally the most embarrassing photo of my whole life,” she said of the snapshot, which was taken on her 13th birthday and features her reading a Harry Potter book with glasses, braces, and that awkward look that most of us rocked when we were 13. “I don’t think I’d even recognize you,” Kimmel said of Robbie’s throwback pic. (To be fair, would we recognize a pic of Kimmel on his 13th b-day?)
“I’m clearly really enjoying myself reading Harry Potter,” she said. “I have braces, which I had for two years. I was really into slicking my hair back, God knows why.” The best part: She didn’t even need those glasses! “I’m wearing glasses, which I didn’t actually need,” she said. “I have 20/20 vision, and I lied to get glasses so I could look like Harry Potter. They’re not even cool ones. They’re, like, ugly glasses,” Robbie said. “I went to the optometrist and I was like, ‘I can’t see that. Ow! My eyes hurt!’ My mom’s like, ‘Do you really need glasses?’ I was like, ‘Yes, I do!'”
Margot Robbie, world-class hottie, faked bad eyesight to get glasses like Harry Potter when she was 13. Maybe stars really are just like us.
