As the granddaughter of Ottavio and Rosita Missoni—aka the founders of what’s arguably Italy’s most recognizable label—32-year-old Margherita Missoni is a real life fashion heiress.
She entered the fashion spotlight thanks to the success of her grandparents’ eponymous brand, and her mom, Angela, currently runs the iconic brand, but Margherita—a new mother herself—isn’t riding anyone’s coattails. Instead, it’s her own distinctive, personal sense of style that she’s known for, and her colorful outfits often brighten up the streets of her native Milan during Fashion Week.
The Italian tastemaker recently launched her own collection of clothes for children and has started dabbling in menswear design, starting with a pocket square collaboration with Peroni Nastro Azzurro that will hit stores October 1, a project that she describes as “a special opportunity to re-interpret a classic Italian accessory in a new way.”
Right now, the style star and designer is in the U.S. for New York Fashion Week, so we caught up with her to talk fashion, what she snacks on between runway shows, and how she’s changed since becoming a mother.
How was the process of designing menswear different to what you’ve worked on in the past?
I really enjoyed collaborating with Peroni on ‘The Capitol’ because the pocket square is such a staple for men, especially in Italian culture. The design was sparked by the famous Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, which was designed by Michelangelo, and is absolutely stunning. It has this trapezoidal design and the buildings around it were angled so that it appears larger than it actually is, which has a beautiful effect. I couldn’t be happier with the final outcome—a soft light blue and white piece, handmade in Italy.
