Kim Kardashian might be all about custom Hermès handbags and Givenchy gowns now, but we all know the reality star wasn’t always dripping in designer labels and—to her credit—she’s been pretty forthcoming about her fashion sense B.K. (before Kanye.)
In a new interview with CNN, the 34-year-old freely admitted she’s “mortified” when she thinks back at earlier outfit choices, and says she owes her new look to her husband, who may or may not have seen “My Fair Lady” one too many times.
“I really think that my relationship with my husband Kanye really changed everything,” she said. “I mean, back in the day I thought I had the best style. I look back at outfits and I’m, like, mortified… Before my husband and I started dating, he brought me [former Vogue Paris editor] Carine Roitfeld‘s coffee table book [Carine Roitfeld: Irreverent] and was like, ‘You should be studying this book, this is like the fashion bible.'”
By “back in the day” we assume Kim’s referring to the years during which she was often spotted on the red carpet as Paris Hilton‘s sidekick.

This isn’t the first time Kim’s admitted her wardrobe 180 has more to do with Kanye’s keen eye for fashion than her own sense of style. You might remember that soon after the pair began dating in 2012, Kanye appeared on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” and made a point of cleaning out Kim’s closet and replacing her old pieces with fresh designer looks, and when the couple infamously appeared together on the cover of Vogue in 2014, Kim admitted to the mag that she had no idea who Margiela was before getting schooled by West.
It’s turned out to be a smart move for the couple: Before the major image overhaul, Kim wasn’t exactly in high demand among designers or photographers, the way she is today. Givenchy creative director, Riccardo Tisci—now a close friend to Kardashian—even admitted to only befriending Kim because of his close relationship with Kanye, and the rapper himself told Style.com that he lost friends in the fashion community when he first started dating Kim.
“Kanye has definitely inspired me to be a little bit more of an individual,” Kim said at the time. “I think my style is evolving and changing, and I think it should, because that’s what life is about. He’s a fashion designer and he loves clothes, so I’m excited to collaborate with him and see what his take on fashion is.”
Despite clearing out the tacky nightclub dresses from Kim’s closet, Kanye’s managed to retain Kim’s signature sexpot aesthetic, picking curve-hugging midi dresses, sheer fabrics, and necklines that show off plenty of cleavage from collections at Givenchy, Lanvin, Céline, and Azzedine Alaïa, and by doing so, managed to make her—for better or worse—the most famous woman on the planet.
