“It’s sad to see them tailing the girls. It’s always the girls towering in sky-high heels and the little guy with the two camera bags taking her picture in the street. They’re like little puppies following the girls’ every whim.” That was Bryanboy‘s Bryan Yambao talking to the The Cut back in April of last year—and he’s referring, of course, to the fashion blogger’s boyfriend.
Fast-forward 18 months, and it’s not just top bloggers taking their photos (way too) seriously; it’s just about every girl with a smartphone and an Instagram account. Enter the “Instagram husband,” a term coined especially for those significant others tasked with taking their ladies’ photos for social media. Now it’s the inspiration for a hilarious social-satire video going viral.
You definitely recognize this guy—hell, you might even be dating one. If not, you’ve seen him take photos of his wife in quiet brick lanes and watched him wait patiently before eating so his lady can Instagram their brunch. Nope, you don’t need to be an influencer with thousands of followers to need an Instagram husband.
“Behind every cute girl on Instagram is a guy like me … and a brick wall,” says Jeff, one Instagram Husband shown in the video.
“Last year for Christmas I actually got her a selfie stick, and then she got mad at me because she thought I was just trying to get out of taking photos,” another S.O. says in the video. “Of course I’m trying to get out of taking your fucking photo.”
Watch the video and laugh. Or maybe just cringe, because it hits embarrassingly close to home for a lot of us.
