Like you, we’re firm believers that an incredible outfit isn’t defined by price–it’s more important to have an eye for style than lots of zeros in your bank account. This philosophy is especially useful during the start of each new season, when off-the-runway trends start to trickle down to retailers and we;re tempted to splurge on things we know are fashion-approved.
Obviously, that’s an expensive game to play, which is why it’s worth looking to retailers offering those same trends for less. Why? Well, for starters, there’s an excellent chance that, after the season is up and the luster starts to fade, you might start to feel that your splurge was partially due to the immediacy of having something covetable, rather than having something you absolutely adore. Also, because anything with the word “trend” attached to it might not be something you want to blow a paycheck on.
To that end, we’ve highlighted five big pieces that ruled fall runways—from skinny scarves to biker jackets—and options to snag them for under $200.
When you think of ultra-skinny scarves, visions of male classic rockers—David Bowie, Keith Richards, Steven Tyler—might come to mind, but the style has undergone a high-fashion makeover in recent months. Several labels—including Chloé, pictured—showcased slivers of silk draped across models’ necks, adding a serious dose of effortless cool to everything from silky blouses to tees.

Let’s start by giving credit where credit’s due: When it comes to over-the-knee footwear, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman deserves all the glory. Now that that’s settled, let’s talk about today’s take on the thigh-high trend, which offers a little less flash, a lot less trash, and some major style points for those who dare. This season’s must-have overcoat is not merely a little loose but drastically oversize, with dropped shoulders, extra-long cuffs, and gigantic lapels. While we first saw the roomy style emerge a few seasons back, designers such as Tome, Michael Kors (pictured), and Lemaire are really ramping it up for Fall 2015.
