I’m a staunch advocate of the denim skirt—always have been, always will be.
I bought my first one at Abercrombie kids in middle school—probably on one of the trips to Buffalo, New York, we coerced our poor parents into making, since we didn’t have the brand in Canada yet—and wore it every chance I got until I finally had to give in and admit that a kids’-size skirt was probably not appropriate for a teenager who’d grown six inches since buying it. Since then, I’ve graduated to a tattered, faded Levi’s mini—the remnants of an old pair of men’s jeans (I wish I could tell you I cut it myself, but that would be a lie), which I break out every summer without shame. Does it look a little mid-2000s? Maybe, but it’s all in the styling. Paired with black Chelsea boots and a leather jacket, I refuse to buy that it’s ever really out of style.
Of course, there are a dozen other denim-skirt styles out there if you’re still a little put off by the cutoff mini: curve-hugging pencil skirts, ’70s snap-fronts, Baja-style wrap numbers, ankle-length A-lines (cool with a tied-up tee, as you’ll see in the gallery ahead), and more.
