Rihanna wears one all of the time. J.Crew Creative Director Jenna Lyons is a fan. And street style stars during the latest round of fashion weeks couldn’t seem to take them off. That’s right, the baseball cap is the accessory of the instant, and it’s not going away anytime soon.

Here are five tips on how to wear a baseball cap and look seriously stylish (read: not look like you just left a sports stadium). For outfit ideas, click through the gallery above to see how street style stars are wearing theirs!

1. Pair it with something unexpected. Street style stars are pairing baseball caps with unexpected outfits—everything from cocktail dresses to pantsuits. It is the unexpected styling that makes the look work.

2. Go bold with your hat choice. Don’t just go for any baseball cap—pick up one in leather, in a neon color, or even studded—to really stand out.

3. Stay away from wearing it with other athletic gear. You are going to want to the put the sneakers down when you are wearing a baseball cap. You don’t want to look like you just left a game.

4. Wear it facing front. We couldn’t be happier to report that the ’90s trend of backwards hats is officially dead. Wear your baseball cap facing front. Enough said.

5. It can be practical if you need it to be. Bad hair day? Getting off a long flight? The baseball cap can be your friend in those situations and so many more.

Go Punk (Just A Little Bit)

Not totally on board with the punk trend, but want to experiment? Try a studded baseball cap, which will instantly transform everything from jeans to a black dress. Do a dark maroon lip for extra credit.

Add Edge To A Girly Dress

We love that model and girl-about-town Dree Hemingway accessorized a girly white lace dress with a New York Yankees cap. The look is totally unexpected, and easy to replicate at home.

Give A New Spin To A Wardrobe Standby

We love the look of a pantsuit (which couldn't be more on trend this fall) combined with a baseball cap. Feel like you are too young to be wearing something be it a pantsuit or a grown-up pencil skirt? Just add a baseball cap.

Black On Black

With the fall runways awash in black and leather, why not scoop up a black leather baseball cap? A serious statement piece, it works with lace, the LBD, and even black jeans.
