Shhhhhh… today is all about secrets. Designer secrets! Can you keep them confidential? Good. Now, I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Imitation is the highest form of flattery.” Well, I happen to find truth in it time and time again. From the girls in junior high school who hate you ’cause they ain’t you, to the hordes of Adele impersonators (I mean, have you heard her new album yet? Hello?!), the imitation game has been around forever. It seems as if you can’t find anything these days that is truly 100-percent bonafide original.

Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate, dependent on your perspective. Some say this signifies the end of creative thought, while others argue that imitation leads to the perfection of a form. Either way you look at it, the truth is that imitation happens all the time. And interior furnishings are no exception.

So…what are we to do? We can use this to our advantage to make our homes beautiful on a budget! How’s that possible, you ask? Follow along as I show you some of my favorite high-low pieces in the gallery, and be amazed at the vast differences in the furniture industry. The only question you’ll have to ask is, “Who wore designed it better?”

At the dawn of the midcentury modern craze in the late 1940s, Han Wegner designed the iconic Wishbone Chair. Famous for its unusual shape, and infamously difficult to produce, the chair is now a classic. Authentic replicas can be found at Design Within Reach, but for a home in L.A., Homepolish's Stefani Stein found another version at Rove Concepts.

The Chesterfield sofa has been around since the 1600s and usually refers to a couch that has been tufted with deep buttons. The classic design has been replicated countless times, and many retailers have their own versions. Take this version in our co-founder Noa's apartment from Restoration Hardware. A masterful reproduction by Timothy Oulton, the sofa evokes the grand gentlemen's club tradition. Now, if you aren't Philip Stanhope (the fourth Earl of Chesterfield where the sofa gets its name, duh), Home Decorators Collection has its own for just less than $1,000!

Another popular chair is the Marais. Made from galvanized steel, this bistro chair debuted in 1934. The versatile design makes it perfect for commercial cafés or residential dining rooms alike. Again, the original is over at Design Within Reach. AllModern is where our designer Haley Weidenbaum found them for her own home.

Franco Albini might not be a well-known name outside of design circles (I mean, don't you know all your Italian architects and designers?), but he's responsible for the classic woven rattan ottoman, which typically sells for quite the pretty penny. But Anthropologie has one just like it! That's where Homepolish's Stefani Stein found it for a home in L.A.

This silver stump coffee table is a serious design statement, an amazing blend of naturalistic and industrial. Pictured in this Upper West Side NY apartment is the high-end version from ABC Home, but CB2 has a similar product for a fraction of the price.

The dresser in this serene Venice Beach bungalow, also by Haley, is a real showstopper. Here, it's a beautiful piece from Organic Modernism. However, with white sides and a rustic reclaimed wood front, West Elm's Emmerson dresser has a shockingly similar vibe.
