We know what you’re thinking: First, we told you brooches were cool, and now we’re here saying you should try yet another maligned accessory: fishnets.
But hear us out: Not only were the open-weave stockings prevalent on the Fall 2015 runways (we saw them oversize at Proenza Schouler, floral-adorned at Libertine, and flesh-colored at Jill Stuart) but the traditionally rebellious hosiery has evolved from punk-rock to street-chic, as style stars such as Anna Dello Russo, Elena Perminova, and Alexandra Golvanoff have recently started sporting them.
Fishnets come as the latest in an avalanche of rock star–inspired trends (septum rings, undercuts, customized jackets, etc.) being adopted by the fashion crowd, but they are easy to incorporate into a real-life wardrobe.
The key to avoid veering into Avril Lavigne territory is to rock fishnets with classic, feminine pieces. At night, try layering them under a frilly minidress topped off with a leather biker jacket and over-the-knee boots. Or, go work-friendly by allowing a pop of fishnets to peek out between the hem of a midi skirt and ankle booties.
