In a move that should surprise approximately no one, Gwyneth Paltrow is now selling $1,695 designer clutches emblazoned with rappers’ names.
On her lifestyle site Goop, Gwynnie’s hawking two bags designed in collaboration with Edie Parker that—sorry, it’s true—pretty much define what it means to be a one percenter: A clutch that says “Biggie” on one side and “Pac” on the other in shiny cursive (yes, Pac, not Tupac. So chill.) Never mind these two were in a fierce, very real East Coast-West Coast battle throughout the ’90s, both dying from gunshot wounds around a year apart—owning this clutch shows you really get rap music.
The other offering is an homage to Eminem and Paltrow bestie Jay Z, with the words “Shady” on one side and “Hov” on the other. More in-the-know nicknames! Also a semi-random pairing: While these two rappers have collaborated (and argued) in the past, they’re not associated with one another other than the fact that they’re household names, even among folks not so invested in hip-hop.
We’re typically fans of Edie’s gorgeous, cheeky clutches, and understand that certain things Gwyneth does makes her lovable in a roundabout way, but we can’t help but agree with others who’ve commented that this particular collection not only feels a bit tone-deaf, but also feels slightly mocking to both the rappers they’ve chosen to pair up and the consumer, who will shell out nearly $2,000 to carry a bag that proves to the world just how down they are.
