In these rather difficult times, it is a truly moving and reassuring spectacle to see the good in people come shining through despite every indication to the contrary. That is exactly what happened at this year’s elegant ARTWALK NY event benefitting Coalition for the Homeless. Held in the gorgeous Skylight Studios space in downtown Manhattan, the fundraiser sold twice the amount of tickets as last year’s event, bringing in over 900 attendees, and raised over $110,000 in the silent auction alone. And what a worthy cause to support; Coalition for the Homeless caters to the 120,000+ New Yorkers (including 44,000 children) who reside in homeless shelters each year. The organization sends out feeding vans filled with volunteers who pass out cartons of milk, warm soup and bread–the trips are an eye-opening experience, to say the least, and only encourage one to want to help out even more.
Evidently, my admiration for Coalition certainly isn’t unique. Amongst the festive attendees at ARTWALK were notable guests Pat Steir, Richard Tuttle, Dustin Yellin, Louise Fishman, Andres Serrano, Narciso Rodriguez, Chadwick Bell, Alec Baldwin, Carey Lowell, Tate Donovan, Anh Duong, Valerie Boster, Genevieve Bahrenburg, Hayley Bloomingdale, Dalia Oberlander, Annie Churchill, Bonnie Morrison, Mickey Boardman, Kipton Cronkite and Moises de la Renta, all hosted by the lovely Bettina Prentice, who served as co-chair.
And those weren’t the only bold-face names to contend with–stunning works by artists like John Baldessari, Louise Fishman, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Ed Ruscha, and Pat Steir were snapped up during the live auction with Alec Baldwin himself winning the Kim McCarty watercolor for over twice its expected price and a Pat Steir painting for $95,000, making for a successful evening indeed.
As the saying goes, “When the going gets tough…”
