Keep your favorite notebook in style with this vegan-leather DIY notebook cover. The subtle lavender shade will add a lovely and unexpected romantic touch to an otherwise drab planner or journal.
- Sewing needle
- Lavender faux leather
- Silver collar stud
- Gray thread
Gather your tools. You’ll need the lavender faux leather, silver collar stud, thread, scissors, pencil, ruler, a sewing needle and a standard journal or notebook.
This piece of leather will cover an 8.5″ x 5″ notebook or smaller. If your edges are uneven, you’ll want to use a ruler, trace a straight line close to the edge of the faux leather, and cut a small strip off.
Cut off a 12″ piece of thread and thread your sewing needle. Tie a triple knot at the end of the thread.
Fit and size the faux leather around your notebook. You’re making a small sleeve for the front cover to fit into. It should fold over at least one inch.
Begin sewing the top of the jacket flap down. Start on the inside corner to hide your knot. You’ll then continue down the length of the top with a running stitch.
Try to keep your stitches an even distance from each other and the top of the notebook.
When you reach the end, pull your thread to the inside of the flap.
Tie a secure double knot around the last stitch on the inside of the flap.
Cut off the excess thread and repeat for the bottom of the jacket flap.
Using a ruler as your guide, trace a dot on the middle of the top of the jacket flap where the stud will go, at least 1″ up from the edge.
Carefully slide over the top flap to make a mark in the same spot on the bottom flap.
Very carefully, pinch the leather so you have easy access to the spot you marked, and use your scissors to cut a small hole. If you have a screw or rotary punch this would be a great time to use it!
For the top hole, you can very carefully cut a small circle. This is where the stud will go, so make sure it’s not too large or the flap won’t be secure.
Cut the same size slit on the bottom flap where you marked with pencil.
Place a silver collar screw stud through the bottom of the lower jacket flap, and secure the top of the stud on the other side.
Slide over your notebook of choice.
Secure shut, and stash your new and improved journal in your carryall.
Also works if you have a smaller notebook!
