It’s statistically probable that you lost your virginity at the age of 17—well, 17.2 according to the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For guys, the average is a few months younger than that. However, there’s a small percentage of the population—less than five percent—who are later-in-life virgins, abstaining from sex until their 30s or beyond for reasons that include religion, medical issues, or their own personal insecurities.
With a little help from the Whisper app, we tracked down and chatted with one such virgin, a 27-year-old male from Phoenix who was happy to anonymously give us a little insight into what it’s like to not have sex.
Firstly, what are your primary reasons for not having sex?
I’m shy and insecure about how I look.
How do you bring up the topic of your virginity to women you might want to date?
I let them know that I’ve never been in a relationship, and it usually comes up from there.
What sort of reaction do you get when you tell them?
Some women don’t believe me, they think that I’m telling a lie in an attempt to get laid. Most just tell me that I’m too attractive to be a virgin.
What do your friends say about the fact you’re a virgin?
It’s not something that I share with friends.
What about your family—are you open about it with them?
No, they don’t [know.] It’s not something that I discuss with anyone in my family.
How do you feel about being a virgin?
It bothers me. With each passing year it gets worse. I’m finally taking steps to break out of my shell and take a risk. I’m tired of missing out.
Have you ever considered losing your virginity to a sex worker?
I’ve thought about it. But I don’t think I’d be ever to do something like that. I’d want someone who cares about me. I’m not needing love, but some sort of emotional connection is necessary.
What do you imagine sex feels like?
Like disco lemonade or double cherry pie.
When you think about your first time, what do you want it to be like?
I want it to be with someone that cares about me and someone that I can trust.
If you could lose your virginity to any celebrity, who would it be?
Michelle Pfeiffer, circa 1992.
Is there anything that scares about having sex for the first time?
Scared about the possible risks, like pregnancy and STDs.
