I kind of feel that, in recent years, street style—once exciting and inspiring to me—has become a giant snoozefest. No disrespect to Chiara Ferragni or Anna Dello Russo (you guys always look great), but my eyes tend to glaze over when looking at photo after photo of head-to-toe designer outfits, posed as if they’re chosen by the women themselves. The street-style looks I gravitate toward—and pin like crazy—are the ones that convey a sense of personality and that very obviously aren’t constructed from 100 percent Fendi (or Prada, Céline, Vuitton …).
That’s why I’m loving Clara Racz right now; she’s a fairly low-key name in the international street-style circus whose outfits are cool and interesting. Because I’ve seen her photos cropping up on sites I tend to search lately, I decided to reach out to learn more about Racz, the woman who desperately made me want to pair a sweatshirt covered in Marge Simpson’s face with a silver metallic pleated skirt.
Who are you, and what do you do?
I was born in Romania, and now I live in Milan. I work as a model, and I’m also involved in styling and consulting. I work with brands [who think] my taste [fits] their collections. My passion for vintage allows me to have a different vision when it comes to fashion, and this passion is really useful.
How did you get into the fashion industry?
It all started when I went to university. I met an agent who asked me if I would be interested in modeling, and I said, “OK, I can try that.” For a while, I worked only in Romania, then after university, I started traveling. I went to Paris, Germany, Tokyo, Korea, New York. Then finally I ended up in Milan. 🙂
Can you describe your style?
It’s really hard. I like to experiment with new things. My style can change so much from one day to another; it’s very much dependent on my mood. I can go from boyish to very chic, romantic, sometimes rock, but the most important thing is to feel comfortable.
I love Chanel, Saint Laurent, Prada, Marc Jacobs.
If we opened your closet today, what would we see a lot of?
Denim and oversize jackets.
What’s the last thing you bought?
A pink bomber from a Korean brand called 13month.
What’s the one thing you’d never wear?
Anything that’s too short.
Do you use any fashion-related apps?
I use Depop. It’s a very interesting app; you can buy and resell in a very easy way.
What will you be buying this winter?
A pair of Dior vinyl boots.
What’s the layering trick you swear by during the winter?
I’d totally go for a pair of edgy leather leggings and my favorite boyfriend sweater with an oversize coat.
If money wasn’t a factor, what would you buy right now?
A Chanel bag.
