While 2015 was the year that love was maybe, possibly dead, it was also the year of a lot of celebrity weddings, proving that there are at least green shoots of hope in this world balancing out the bad.
Some of them, like Sofia Vergara’s, were splashed across Instagram (multiple times!) for all the world to see, while others, like Mary-Kate Olson’s, were the stuff of matrimonial legend (a private event in Manhattan with just 50 people and bowls of cigarettes as favors? That our kind of wedding).
We’ve highlighted some of the most notable knots of 2015, from first time romances to the second (or third) time around. Maybe love isn’t dead, after all?
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
Depp, 51, tied the knot with fellow actor Amber Heard, 28—twice—over a weeklong period. Once in their home of Los Angeles, and once more in a private island in the Bahamas. Surprisingly, this is only the second marriage for Depp (having been married in the ’80s to Lori Anne Allison), but had been engaged to actresses Jennifer Grey, Sherilyn Fenn and Winona Ryder, as well as a highly-public relationship with Kate Moss.
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux
The tabloids can no longer speculate that Aniston is hung up on ex Brad Pitt—after a three-year engagement, she married Theroux at their home in Bel Air. According to reports, Jen told guests she was throwing a surprise 44th birthday for Justin, but a cake and a pastor showing up meant the gig was up.
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello
The actors (of Modern Family and True Blood fame, respectively) wed in a lavish Palm Beach, Florida ceremony right before Thanksgiving, officially becoming the most photogenic couple in history. The bride wore a custom Zuhair Murad gown.
Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy
Everyone’s favorite Full House alum (who will tragically not be returning to the Netflix relaunch) got hitched to her longtime boyfriend, 49-year-old banker Olivier Sarkozy, in November. The intimate ceremony at their Manhattan home included a around 50 guests and reportedly, “bowls and bowls” of cigarettes. Tres French!
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher
The former That 70s Show co-stars reportedly tied the knot over the Fourth of July weekend, though details are still scant. And that’s no small feat in the age of social media. They also welcomed their daughter, Wyatt, into the world in October.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter
The Sherlock actor is not only good at looking like otters, but is also supremely talented at breaking the hearts of millions of Cumberbitches. It was the “I Do” heard across the world when he tied the knot with longtime girlfriend and theater director Sophie Hunter in March on Britain’s Isle of Wight in a low-key Valentine’s Day ceremony.
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
The actress and Good Charlotte guitarist tied the knot back in January at the actress’ home in Beverly Hills. Diaz caused a stir by getting married on a Monday, but we think it was incredibly smart—what paparazzi was expecting such a no-fuss wedding from one of Hollywood’s leading ladies? And on a day of the week that is the butt of all office jokes, no less.
Allison Williams and Ricky Van Veen
The “Girls” star and daughter of newscaster Brian Williams tied the knot to the College Humor co-founder in a super-secret ranch wedding in Wyoming, and stunned in a custom Oscar de la Renta wedding gown that gave us serious bridal envy.
Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik
The New Girl actress secretly tied the knot with Pechenik, a producer, in August, and a short time later, gave birth to their first child, the adorkably-named Elsie Otter Pechenik.
Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild
The heiress wore a custom Valentino gown to wed her financier fiance at Kensington Palace in July. Was she trying to emulate Kate Middleton‘s own fit-for-a-princess Alexander McQueen gown? You be the judge.
Amy Adams and Darren Le Gallo
The Oscar-winner and Le Gallo, her fiancé of seven years, finally tied the knot at a top-secret ceremony in May. Good things, it seems, comes to those who wait.
Bar Refaeli and Adi Ezra
The Israeli model and actress found love with Ezra, who works in business. After dating for three years, the couple tied the knot at a hotel overlooking the Ramon Crater in Israel, with Refaeli, 30, wearing a sheer Chloe dress.
Tina Knowles and Richard Lawson
The matriarch of the Queen Bey dynasty got hitched at a family-filled event on a yacht in Newport Beach, California. Beyonce basically wore a wedding gown for her bridesmaid dress, and Jay Z, Solange, and former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams were also on board to celebrate.
Hilary Rhoda and Sean Avery
The supermodel tied the knot with Avery, a former professional ice hokey player, in October at the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island and stunned in a cream Carolina Herrera gown.
Whitney Port and Tim Rosenman
The former MTV reality star sported a unique high-low dress for her November nuptials to longtime boyfriend Tim Rosenman.
