And so it begins: The 2016 Cannes Film Festival kicked off Wednesday in the French Riviera, marking the first of 11 days of glitzy galas, photocalls, and film premieres. The Cannes red carpet is always among the most glamorous in the world, drawing A-listers and supermodels alike. (It doesn’t hurt that Chopard, L’Oréal, and fashion conglomerate Kering are among the event’s official sponsors.)
On day one, a pregnant Blake Lively arrived at the opening-night gala in an embellished Atelier Versace naked dress—not too dissimilar from the Cavalli Couture gown Bella Hadid chose for her festival debut. Naomi Watts chose a pretty lilac Giorgio Armani Privé dress with just the right amount of sparkle, while Kristen Stewart proved that being the face of Chanel has its advantages, turning up in a look straight off the Cuba runway.
Throughout the rest of the festival, expect to see models such as Karlie Kloss and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (both of whom are cochairing the amfAR gala on the 19th) and actresses such as Elle Fanning, Marion Cotillard, and Charlize Theron (all of whom have films premiering there this week), along with the usual host of international movie stars dressed in their best couture.
