With Naomi Watts and Lupita Nyong’o sitting front row, it was no question that the Calvin Klein show remains one of the biggest draws during New York Fashion Week. That being said, the collection has become pretty predictable in recent seasons. We know that Francisco Costa, Women’s Creative Director of Calvin Klein, can cut one hell of a cocktail dress and knows how to make just about the most perfect of coats, but his minimalist point of view has seemingly been on repeat.

Which is why the Fall 2014 collection felt like a total breadth of fresh air for the fashion house. Costa says that this season Loretta Lux’s photographs of children served as starting point for a collection that felt like a fusion of ladylike and grunge inspirations. There were sweater dresses galore, perfect tweed coats with oversized safety pins threaded with plastic beads instead of buttons, and even skirt suits, all paired with lug-soled lace-up boots, which are sure to be an instant “it” item come fall.

Costa estimates that 85 percent of this collection consisted of knitwear, a huge departure for the label, but right on trend with what we saw on many of the Fall runways. Everyone is definitely going to want to invest in a sweater dress this fall. The knits here were particularly spectacular, including turtlenecks hand-stitched with front panels to give the look of having just come off the loom.

Urban and cool, these are the kind of clothes that are going to get women into the stores, and we are excited to see how Costa continues to evolve the label next season.

Costa estimated that at least 85 percent of the collections was knits, a big departure for the house.

The new urban and cool direction for the label (including the lug-soled lace-ups) struck the perfect note.
