I ache inside that it’ll never be the 1980s or ’90s again. Seriously: I watch television shows that were cool when I was a kid, and I definitely feel a pang that a four-minute credit sequence or, to some extent, a laugh track are so scarily dated. I also feel that same pang when I watch reruns of The Golden Girls—it’s funny, sure, but perhaps no other sitcom nailed 1980s fashion better.
While all four main characters were pros at rocking jogging suits, pastel blazers, and giant earrings, it was Blanche Devereaux—the aging promiscuous Southern belle played by the late, great Rue McClanahan—whose style really speaks to me, even in 2015.
I happen to love vintage silk blouses and jackets with shoulder pads (yes, seriously) and regularly scour Etsy for the right ones, so I’m especially drawn to Blanche’s collection—not to mention her silky sleepwear, sportswear separates, and ruffled blouses. Read on to see for yourself.
I mean, in addition to those sick shoulder pads and that scarf, I’m sure more than a few ladies can agree with Blanche’s point.
Blanche doing her best “wow, I’d love if H&M did a collab with Balmain.”
Stop Googling “what to wear to a holiday party.”
Another day, another pastel floral outfit.
Blanche has some serious off-the-shoulder game.
Not only does Blanche have attitude to spare, she has an abundance of flimsy jackets with shoulder pads.
Nobody does silk sleepwear quite like Blanche.
Now that’s how you layer.
I obviously need a red sequined tunic and red silk joggers.
Why aren’t matching pieces of sportswear back in style?
This bronze blazer is pretty much the highlight of the credits.
Let’s talk about this sweatshirt.
