Bring us your flower crowns, your crocheted rompers, your body chains: It’s our first annual Gilded Ferris Wheel Awards, the definitive ranking of the most committed Coachella-goers when it comes to the institution of “festival fashion.”
For the past two weekends (more if you count all the #tbt posts to last year’s bacchanal), our social-media feeds have been awash with celebrities, Instagram It-girls, and Victoria’s Secret models turning the Indio desert into their own personal runway. The festival is one place where looking “effortless” is not the goal—while track pants and T-shirts may be de rigueur back in L.A. and New York, choker necklaces, fringed bandanas, and acres of taut, tanned skin might as well be a local ordinance once you pass the Palm Springs city limits.
As it turns out, projecting one’s inner free spirit tends to produce a very specific aesthetic, and every year, there are a very few stars who really epitomize the look. While Coachella was far less celebrity-filled the second time around, there were still a few bold-faced names that passed through the festival. Read on for our top picks from weekend two, and check out our weekend one winners here.
While the Coachella rookie didn’t make the cut last weekend, she eked in to third place in this round after making a brief cameo on day three to watch boyfriend Calvin Harris perform. With BFF (and birthday girl) Gigi Hadid in tow, Swift broke out her festival-friendly crop top/bralette combo, having sagely predicted the death knell of choker necklaces on weekend one. For a first-timer, she nailed the Indio aesthetic, and her newly-bleached hair added just the right amount of edge to complete the Coachella look.
A veteran of the festival scene, Ambrosio is one of the few models we actually believe dresses like her Coachella self in everyday life (well, minus a few flash tattoos). The Victoria’s Secret alum even has her own line of swimwear and boho accessories, alé by Alessandra, so the dual-weekend extravaganza is as much a marketing opportunity for her as it is a chance to kick back on an inflatable swan or two. She also scores extra points for always having a squad of leggy, similarly kitted-out friends around to throw up peace signs and pose for the street style cameras.
There are celebrities that love Coachella, and then celebrities that looooove Coachella. Hilton is the latter. This year, she made a strong showing all six (!) days of the festival, bringing suitcases upon suitcases of sheer maxi dresses, sparkly sunglasses, leather body harnesses, and costumey kitten ears to show off in her daily #CoachellaLook posts on Instagram and Snapchat. Sure, some of her outfits may have gone out of style in 2008, but Hilton, bless her heart, is the queen of DGAF. She is living her best life, and her best life involves prancing around the desert in a designer caftan.
