I’ll spare you every little detail, but let’s just say I’ve been a slave to my hair for most of my life. I grew up with frizzy, thick, unmanageably curly hair that I’d flatiron into oblivion until I discovered keratin treatments in 2009, which quite literally changed my life. Instead of spending more than an hour wrangling my mop, I was able to air dry it for the first time ever—and the result was game-changing for me: effortless cool-girl waves that got me compliments wherever I went—a genuine first in my life.

About a year and a half ago, I decided to stop getting these treatments, thanks to the alarming reports about the hidden—and harmful—chemicals. I’m still on the lookout for healthier, equally effective options (please help, anyone!), but without them, I do have to spend more time tending to my hair.

While I’ve figured out a system that largely revolves around the Amika Tourmaline Curler 4P ($200), my hair never quite looks as good as the women in the gallery above, each of whom has those perfectly imperfect “I woke up like this” waves.

Here, 30 photos that’ll make you want to break out your own clampless iron, immediately.
