To say Lea Michele stunned last night at the People’s Choice Awards is an understatement. Although the singer and actress nailed the red carpet look from head-to-toe, we couldn’t stop staring at her take on the classic messy bun. TRESemmé Celebrity Stylist John D. created Michele’s updated style and specifically opted for an updo, so as not to distract from the star’s Ellie Saab LBD, describing the overall vibe as “fresh and cool.”

Although this twisted knot seems difficult to recreate at home, it’s really quite simple. Score! In fact, we got the exact steps (and products!) John D. used to get the look. Get ready to update your go-to ‘do.

First, prep towel-dried hair with a mousse from roots to ends. This adds a tiny bit of hold and protects hair from frizz caused by the air. John D. used a dollop of TRESemmé Climate Control Mousse ($6, to create this particular look. After applying product, simply use a round brush to blow out hair. This will help smooth the ends and give a tad of volume at the roots—this will be crucial in creating the height for this high knot.

Next, create the bun by gathering hair at the back of the head. Secure as a ponytail with an elastic, making sure that the roots aren’t super taut. (You want to maintain that messy, bedhead look!) Next, split your ponytail into two sections and tie each into loose knots. Once sections are knotted, John D. says to wrap the knots around the ponytail you just created. This will form the bun. Don’t be afraid if tiny pieces come loose—the messier the better on this one. Secure the knots in place with bobby pics and finish with hairspray. John D. used TRESemmé Climate Control Hair Spray ($6, on Lea Michele to banish frizz and hold the look in place.
