In an unexpected beauty move, Topshop Unique’s Spring 2016 show was all about a subtly smeared red lip—a look that’s pretty much been the holy grail of what not to do with lipstick.

Makeup artist Hannah Murray took inspiration from a “debauched garden party—’Princess Margaret meets Courtney Love'”—and defined that very specific brand of party girl with matte red lips that are just messy enough and black glossy liner that’s also not too perfect. “It’s a really lived-in look, very fresh, but there’s a naughtiness to it,” said Murray.

For lips, Murray used Topshop’s Matte Lip Bullet in Boyracer ($10) and applied it with her fingertips (as she did the rest of the look) to achieve the end result that had serious staying power but was intriguingly off-kilter (kind of like when your perfect red lip wears throughout the day).

This is the runway look we’ve been waiting for: A show-stopping lip that doesn’t seem to mind when it goes a bit out of bounds. So the next time your red lip steers off course, pretend it was your plan all along.
