It’s always great to have options in life, but when it comes to picking your Halloween costume, sometimes having endless choices can make your head spin. In our experience, nailing down a Halloween costume category—sexy, scary, sweet—and then planning your makeup around the whole look can eliminate all that stress and help you fast-forward to the fun part of the process: shopping and primping!
This year, we’re in a sexy state of mind, so we decided to ask seven makeup artists to dish on their go-to sexy Halloween makeup look. From classic Cleopatra to a sultry makeup look that will go with any costume you choose, their ideas are sure to catch the eye of all the hot mystery men at your next costume party.
1) Get your disco on at Studio 54.
The ’70s are back in a big way this fall, and a lot of the fashion trends from this oh-so-memorable decade are hot once again. So why not emulate one of the hottest looks of the time? The glitz and glam of nightclub Studio 54 lends itself perfectly to a sexy Halloween makeup look, says butter LONDON makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes: “If there is one time to go bold with beauty, it’s Halloween. Do a jewel-tone eye and bold lip to really make a statement.”
Katie suggests: For a super-glam look, try a cocktail of the following products: butter LONDON Camo Eye Shadow from the ShadowClutch Natural Charm Palette ($39) for lids, butter LONDON Fancy Flutter Wardrobe Duo ($15) to add shimmer, and butter LONDON Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon in Ruby Murray ($20).
2) Channel your inner Egyptian queen as Cleopatra.
Coming up with a sexy Halloween makeup idea was easy for Sonia Kashuk, makeup artist and founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty. The beauty maven was quick to offer Elizabeth Taylor’s memorable portrayal of Cleopatra as inspiration. “Cleopatra and Elizabeth Taylor are both iconic women, and what is better than a mashup of the two? [Taylor’s] classic take on Cleo’s famous makeup is my favorite–it gives you drama while still creating a flattering look.”
Sonia suggests: The key to Cleopatra’s look? Dramatic detail. “For the geometric, exaggerated wing, start by drawing a small line extending the end of the brow about an inch. Then, apply a strip of tape from the outer corner of the eye to the end of that line,” she says. “Now, trace that line inside the tape. Extend another line from the outer corner of the eye to the end of your brow. Fill within this shape.” Your key product? Sonia’s Liquid Line Precision Marker ($7.99).
3) Steal the show as a jewel thief.
“Halloween is one of the best times to experiment and play with makeup. Making your own unique costume rather than just wearing a store-bought one really sets you apart and lets you express your own unique style in a fun way!” says Nicole Tornincaso, product development and makeup artist for FLOWER Beauty. And this year, she’s planning on stealing the show as a jewel thief.
Nicole suggests: “You can use FLOWER’s Kohl It! Kohl Eyeliner in Total Blackout ($7.98) to draw a mask around your eyes (à la the above look from the Chanel SS 16 show); the formula is intensely pigmented, super-creamy, and blendable. To up the sexiness factor, you can wear a black bodysuit and totally drench yourself in costume jewels!”
4) Get a bit catty, woman.
Even though we’re supposed to root for the hero, sometimes we just like the villain a tiny bit more, and we’ve always liked Catwoman in that way. Maybe it’s her sass, maybe it’s her costume, or maybe it’s her killer sex appeal. Whatever it is, CoverGirl makeup artist Jen Fleming says the iconic bad girl makes for the ideal sexy makeup look for your next costume party. “Even with the mask, a sultry Catwoman costume is still all about the eyes,” she says. “Try a thick winged-out liner, and layer a voluminous mascara to give eyes enough intensity to stand on their own.”
Jen suggests: “Upgrade this Halloween’s sultry Catwoman costume with CoverGirl’s Perfect Point Eyeliner ($5.74) for fierce, feline-worthy winged liner and whiskers,” she says.
5) Head back to the ’80s with Jem.
Exclusive Artists Management Makeup Artist Cynthia Rose prefers to get a bit nostalgic when it comes to crafting her go-to sexy Halloween makeup look. “Because I am a child of the ’80s and a pretend rock star, of course my go-to sexy Halloween makeup is Jem. Pink glitter and sparkles: Does it get better than that?” And this look is pretty darn appropriate seeing as how Jem and the Holograms, a new film based on the classic animated TV series, is out this month.
6) Just upgrade the makeup you’re already wearing.
If the costume you chose doesn’t really require a themed makeup look but you want to go with a sexy look anyway, you can always just take the look you’re wearing to the next level. Jessica Scantlin, director of artistry for Blushington, loves to do so: “For my go-to sexy Halloween look, I just amplify everything I already wear. It’s easy and can go with any costume. I use Girlactik Eye Glaze ($20) in the middle of my lid to make the eyes pop and shine (really layer it on so it stands out). I do a really cut crease: Take an eyeliner like Stila Smudge Stick ($22) and put it in [the] crease and then blend out just a little. Next thing is double-winged liner; it’s super fun and sexy.”
Jessica suggests: For skin, amp up your highlight and contour game by going three shades up in contour. For lips, try adding a beauty mark, and use a lip stain.
7) Get your goth on.
There’s a reason the goth look is so popular this time of year—it has an elusive appeal you can’t quite put your finger on. And Exclusive Artists Management Makeup Artist Blondie is all about the goth chick look to make a sexy impact while looking playful. “For those who still want to look cute and sexy on Halloween, I love the goth chick look,” she says. “This look is all about fair skin and dark lips!”
Blondie suggests: To nail the fair-skin look, Blondie recommends prepping skin with PUR minerals Color Correcting Foundation Primer Illuminate and Glow ($31) and following with MAC Pro Face and Body Foundation in White ($36), building up the coverage as you go. And don’t forget the bold lip: “My must-have goth chick lip colors are Nars Audacious Lipstick in Liv ($36), Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Paint ($20), and MAC Lipstick in Cyber ($17),” she says.
