Who Knew? It Takes 8 Hours To Name A New OPI Nail Polish Collection

Shannon Farrell

Not only has nail polish brand OPI pioneered the art of cheeky shade names, it was one of the first lines to collaborate with blockbuster films and celebrities. Now, as a sort of sequel to this winter’s Skyfall collection of bold metallics and reds, the nail polish powerhouse is releasing another Bond-inspired lineup this May. The Bond Girls collection has six polishes inspired by Agent 007’s most iconic conquests.

We met up with Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI co-founder & Artistic Director, at an editor breakfast this week to discuss the new shades, along with the process behind coming up with those punny polish names and the story behind the company’s most surprising collaboration yet.

On The Bond Girls Collection
“The six shades are named after some of the most iconic – and my favorite – Bond girls, including: Solitaire, Pussy Galore, Tiffany Case, Vesper, Honey Ryder and Jinx,” said Suzi. “Worn without top coat, these Liquid Sand lacquers give nails a pebbled, matte finish worthy of the captivating ‘Bond Girls’ name.” Her favorite of the set? Pussy Galore, a shimmery cotton candy pink. (And she may have blushed just a tad when telling us).

On Coming Up With Those Catchy Names
Suzi gathers with staffers in a conference room for as long as eight hours to name all 12 shades in a given collection. If the collection is travel-themed, like this spring’s Euro Centrale, they find inspiration from munching on the country’s delicacies. How else would they come up with a moniker like Hands Off My Kielbasa?

On Nicole By OPI’s Collaboration With Special K Cereal
This collaboration, launching in April, includes three custom shades of Nicole by OPI polish available with the purchase of Special K products. To say this is one of OPI’s more out-there collabs is an understatement. But Suzi put the confusion to rest. “Women are more involved in business now and they actually understand the importance of nail polish.” The thinking behind this partnership is every woman’s goal — looking great and feeling great. What better way than with a healthy diet and perfectly manicured nails? We’re in.
