Last night’s Met Gala red carpet was many things—including, at times, alarming—but when everything was said and done, the hair and makeup were very, very good. From Amy Schumer’s skillful cat-eye to Karolina Kurkova’s understated look (to let her tweet-reactive technology dress shine, of course), the beauty looks ran the spectrum from classic and elegant to wildly outlandish.

Celebrity makeup artist Georgie Eisdell said of Alicia Vikander's radiant skin, "Alicia has absolutely perfect skin, so I wanted it to glow." And glow it did, thanks to both genetics and NARS Hot Sand Illuminator.

Katy Perry did not hold back on the hair and makeup, to say the very least. Her black lipstick and major blue lashes both came courtesy of her new COVERGIRL offerings, but hairstylist Chris Appleton created that major beehive with several products from Oscar Blandi, including what Appleton referred to as "a ton" of Lacca Medium Hold Hair Spray.

Makeup artist Andréa Tiller used Laura Mercier Kajal D'Orient Eye Liner in Noir Supreme to give Amy Schumer her major cat-eye.

Katie Holmes got her extensions did by celebrity hairstylist DJ Quintero, who used the Sultra Seductress to create the perfectly pin-straight texture—which was inspired by Cher, BTW.

Lupita Nyong'o's gravity-defying hair stood out, sure, but it wasn't enough to distract from her subtle bronzy look, which makeup artist Nick Barose created using three Lancôme products, including L'Absolu Rouge in Henne.

Karolina Kurkova offset her tweet-reactive technology dress with very simple, very pretty makeup courtesy of Charlotte Tilbury, who channeled a "modern day, techno Marie Antoinette" for the look. The secret? A canvas primed with Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow, which imparts a "flawless soft-focus finish" to the skin.

Rather than going hard on the makeup, Selena Gomez’s makeup artist Hung Vanngo chose to keep the star looking "beautiful, fresh, sexy, and young." He prepped her skin with Kiehl's Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque to brighten it up and stimulate circulation for a healthy, rosy effect.

That gorgeous, gorgeous rich berry lip cannot go unacknowledged: Celebrity makeup artist Kayleen McAdams (you know where this is going) used NARS Audacious Lipstick in Liv to give sis Rachel McAdams the perfect complement to her gilded head-to-toe look.

Makeup artist Vincent Oquendo created Bella Hadid’s sultry, sophisticated look with a light hand and a lot of contour and highlight—to be more specific, the totally essential Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow in Light to Medium.

The always-gorgeous Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a simple, clean elegant with tons of shine. Celebrity hairstylist Christian Wood used Moroccanoil products to create the look, including Glimmer Shine for that intensely glossy finish.
