We may think of garish blue eye shadow as something to be avoided at all costs, but during its ’80s heyday, the OTT look wasn’t just acceptable—it was totally on trend.
Looking a wee bit further back in history, the same is true of the splotchy, bright-red cheeks and white-out skin that broadcast your status in the Victorian era: The paler your complexion and the more unnaturally flushed your cheeks, the more your look was aligned with money and class.
Seriously skilled celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge (she works with the likes of Keira Knightley and Kate Winslet) takes a walk down memory lane in her latest video, where she re-creates the best—and, of course, worst—beauty moments throughout history, from the Ancient Egyptian look we associate with Cleopatra to a modern, fresh-faced bold lip, providing a bit of commentary along the way.
The historic look back is super fun to watch, but it’s made all the better by Eldridge’s superior makeup artistry. She looks completely different for every era, and she spared no detail, including a new hairstyle for each and every look. The video may clock in at under seven minutes, but we can only imagine how long it actually took her to make it happen.
