The Cannes Film Festival is reliably one of the most wonderful times of the year. Not only do the film buffs among us get the first peek at what’s going to be huge in cinema, but the glamour-lovers get to see all our favorite stars bringing their most dramatic looks to the event’s many red carpets.
And when we think of stars who always serve amazing glamour, we think Lupita N’yongo. The Oscar winner (and star of the upcoming Star Wars film) reliably takes the most unique makeup risks and makes them look impossibly elegant. When she was named Ambassadress of Lancome, we swooned; talk about a match made in cosmetic heaven.
Speaking of heaven: her look at the Cannes opening ceremony (and premiere of La Tete Haute) was sheer perfection. The work of celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose, Lupita’s bold brows, sharply lined eyes and bright lips recall Old Hollywood glamour, but in a totally modern, unique way.
Nick broke down exactly how he created Lupita’s stunning red carpet look. Read on to learn all of her beauty secrets!
Lupita’s complexion is flawless, so Nick concentrated on makeup that would reveal, not cover up, her gorgeous skin. He began by applying Lancome Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate ($78) all over her face to add lightweight, non-greasy hydration to her skin, while also firming and brightening at the same time (hey, how do you think she gets her complexion looking so amazing?). He then applied a thin layer of La Base Pro Pore Eraser ($38) to ensure a perfectly smooth base for the rest of her makeup.
Speaking of makeup, Barose used Lancome’s brand new (and amazing) Miracle Cushion Liquid Compact Makeup ($46.50). This product is a serious gamechanger: a lightweight, supremely buildable liquid foundation suspended in a cushion, it comes in a range of shades guaranteed to suit every skin tone (Lupita wears shade 500 Suede). A light touch of Translucence Mattifying Silky Pressed Powder ($31) set everything and provided additional shine-free radiance.
Then it was time for color and shine. Lancome Blush Subtil ($31) in Plum Noir was applied to the apples of Lupita’s cheeks and blended up towards her temples added a hint of rich color. Le Duo Stick ($36) in Suede, a wonderful multi-tasking product, was used to lightly contour underneath her cheekbones and add some shimmery (but not sparkly) highlight along her cheeks, forehead and chin.
We need to talk about Lupita’s brows. Nick used Sourcils Tint Longwear Eyebrow Pen ($26) in Noir, a soft black, to define and slightly thicken her eyebrows in a supremely natural way. We love how easy this pen applicator is to use, and the sweat-resistant formula makes it a Cannes essential for sure.
The smoky cat eyes were a master stroke. Lancome Artliner liquid eyeliner ($30.50) in Noir was used along the top lashline to create the dramatic flick; if you’re recreating this look at home, use the tail end of your brows as a guide to ensure that your liner has the same angle on each eye. Le Stylo Waterproof eyeliner ($27) in Noir was used to line her upper and lower waterlines (a Lupita trademark), then smudged ever so slightly underneath the bottom lashes for a delicately smoky look.
Finally, Barose used Lancome Grandiôse Mascara ($32) on Lupita’s lop lashes to create a dramatic, wide-eyed effect. The angled wand makes it possible to darken every eyelash, even those teeny ones at the inner corners of our eyes.
Lupita’s cool fuchsia lips were the perfect compliment to her green gown. To create this custom color, Nick layered three Lancome products: Color Design Lipcolor ($22) in Hit List (bright pink), Shine Lover Lipstick ($25) in Palpitane (deep purple-pink) and Le Crayon ($25) in Plum (rich berry purple). We love the vibrant, glossy end product!
And just in case you can’t get enough of this look, Our Lady L posted this GORGEOUS behind-the-scenes instagram.
Jaw-dropping. Not only is she beautiful and talented, she also takes the perfect selfie (because of course she does). We love you, Lupita!
