Lupita Nyong’o is one of those
ugh, annoying rare specimens who manage to look flawless in everything—that we can all agree on. So when we saw the Oscar winner roll up to the European premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Wednesday wearing blue lipstick with her Proenza Schouler outfit, we were like “Cool, that’s a thing now.” We also applauded Lupita for having some fun on the red carpet—if there was any event at which sapphire lips are apropos, it’s a sci-fi premiere. The end, moving on.
Well. It seems there’s a whole new twist to the blue lip situation: It’s not actually lipstick.
“The key to making the look daring yet sophisticated was breaking the rules to get the lip right,” Nick Barose, Nyong’o’s makeup artist, told Us. “We played with [eye] shadows to get a blue shade that was deep and rich but not overly edgy.”
Eye shadow! It makes sense: Eye colors customarily are bolder than those made for the lip, and they come in enough varying shades to create your own custom color.
In case you’re awesome and dying to copy Lupita’s blue lip at your holiday parties this weekend (red lipstick = cliché), here are a few shadows that’ll do the trick, mixed with gloss or on their own.
