I’m big on applying facial oils before bed—my skin has plenty of time to absorb and utilize the formulas as I sleep, and I don’t have to worry about anyone seeing me with a super shiny face. But when it comes to using oils during the day to provide skin extra nourishment? That I’ve always been skeptical on.
But after I came across Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate ($46, kiehls.com), a formula that was made specifically to fight the appearance of skin fatigue, I decided to give it a go.
The results were astonishing for me, mostly because I expected to come out of this experiment blotting every 10 minutes and with more pimples than usual. But after using this daily facial oil for a little over a month, I’ve found that my skin is more hydrated (but not oily) and my complexion has actually evened out a little, apart from the natural rosiness I hold in my cheeks.
The formula is a blend of essential and botanical oils—namely ginger root oil, tamanu oil, and sunflower seed oil—which together are said to help with maintaining hydration, increasing smoothness, evening out skin tone, and boosting your skin’s daytime defense against things like pollution and free radicals. You know how your skin always appears tired after a long day? The idea behind this product is fighting off that look over time.
After washing my face in the morning, I apply about 4 droplets to my hands and rub it gently all over my skin—even my T-zone. It totally absorbs in about a minute and leaves my skin looking glowy like a Victoria’s Secret model. I’ve even used it on its own just to get that specific look. Then, I apply my daily moisturizer, my SPF, and my regular makeup on top.
It sounds like a lot of product to smear on your face, but the oil is so lightweight that you don’t even notice it. I think of it almost like my daily skin care vitamin supplement. It doesn’t hurt that the oil smells amazing, too. Turns out when you find the right mix of ingredients, adopting oils into your daily routine doesn’t have to be so scary. It’s become my fall skin care essential, and I’m going to keep using it with hopes that by 6 p.m. on Fridays, my face looks way less exhausted.
