Supermodel Joan Smalls isn’t shy about experimenting with makeup looks on the red carpet—we’re still talking about that electric violet lipstick she wore at this year’s Met Gala—so teaming up with Estée Lauder on a line of matte lip shades makes total sense (and keeps her Instagram fans happy—tagging Joan in their own purple lip photos has become a thing.)
We caught up with Smalls to talk more about beauty in general, and to exclusively debut the above clip from The Estée Edit, which shows how Smalls wears her new lip shades as she transitions throughout her day. Watch the video above, and keep reading to find out what products make this beauty tick.
On her off-duty beauty look.
Smalls, who’s currently relaxing in Fiji before Fashion Week kicks off in September, told us that when she’s not working she prefers to keep makeup to a minimum. “I like to wear moisturizer because it’s important to keep your skin hydrated. I can’t live without Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II, and I love Sumptuous Extreme Waterproof Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara.”
On her go-to “fun night out” product.
The aforementioned mascara is Joan’s go-to when amping up her look for a night out—she said she likes to add “a lot of lashes” while keeping the rest of her face toned down.
On why she chose to make her lip collection all matte.
Not only is matte lipstick more noticeable but, according to Joan, it’s also way easier to maintain than gloss or too-creamy variations. Still, she said she worked with Estée Lauder to make sure each lip color has a creamy base, so as not to dry out your lips. As of right now, her go-to shade for summer is Covetous Nude, a soft, wearable neutral.
On keeping her skin tank-top ready.
While the Puerto Rico-born beauty certainly knows how to create a great makeup look, she also knows there’s nothing worse than ashy, flaky arms to ruin a great look. Smalls told us that she’ll never leave the house without body cream—namely Re-Nutriv Intensive Smoothing Body Cream—to battle scaly skin throughout all seasons. Yep, becoming Joan Smalls is truly a head-to-toe job.
