A Hot Mess: The Messy Bun You’ll Want to Wear Everywhere

From your 12-hour Netflix binge to a black-tie wedding, messy buns are appropriate for nearly every event. They’re also insanely practical for summer: As long as you have a handful of bobby pins, some texture spray, and these uncomplicated instructions, getting your hair off your neck couldn’t be easier. Just follow this 4-step guide by Judy McGuinness, Senior Stylist at Mizu Salon in New York City, to get a messy bun you’ll never want to take out.

1. Apply a heat protectant spray to hair and then curl 1-inch sections.


2. Tease hair at the crown of the head.


3. Gather hair at the nape of your neck. Holding the hair with one hand, twist the lengths and wrap it in a circular shape to create the bun. Use bobby pins to secure.


4. Hold the bun with one hand. Use your other hand to “pinch” sections of hair around the head. This will create volume, texture, and the desired undone look.
