Summer is done, you guys. Let’s start with the positive: It’s the season for cashmere, dark lipstick, and switching to hot coffee. It’s also around this time of the year that we start to lose any post-vacation glow and begin looking a little … dull. Don’t let the season get the best of you—you can totally maintain a lit-from-within quality even when the snow starts to fall.
Fake your way to radiance with a few fundamental industry tricks of the trade. We promise, it’s not as hard as you think.
Commit to moisturizing.
Just because the “eight glasses of water a day” myth was debunked doesn’t mean you can forgo hydration—especially when it comes to your skin. “Even if you have oily skin, moisturizer is a must,” says Christina Zilber, founder and creative director of Jouer Cosmetics. “Too many women skip moisturizer because they’re afraid it will break them out, but if you properly moisturize oily skin, you won’t produce excess sebum.” Keep your complexion in check by moisturizing every day.
Get into a routine.
Very few of us have the time, or the bathroom counter space, to execute a complicated 10-step routine each night. That’s why makeup artist Jenny Kanavaros whittled her routine to four key products. Her essentials? She washes away dirt and makeup with Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Advanced Formula ($67), exfoliates with Laura Mercier Flawless Face Polish ($32), and slathers on Laura Mercier Tone Perfecting Crème ($98) followed by Tatcha Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 ($68).
Remember the big picture.
Kanavaros’s best tips are simple. “The key to making sure your skin doesn’t appear dull or dry is a holistic approach of cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, eating a healthy diet, exercising, and drinking plenty of water,” she says. And the most important tip of all: “Stay out of the sun!”
Double up on foundation.
No, not for crazy coverage. Using two shades of foundation makes an easy go of finding the best color. “Finding the right foundation is tricky for most,” shares Zilber. “I personally use two shades, one for fall and winter and then a deeper shade for spring and summer.” She recommends Jouer’s Foundation Finder for tracking down the perfect match (or two).
Consider a pick-me-up.
A full makeup overhaul may not be in the cards in the middle of the workday, so Kanavaros says to skirt the issue by using a hydrating mist to refresh your face. Her current fave is Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist ($48). She says, “It’s a silky liquid spray-on moisturizer that leaves the skin rehydrated.”
