Legendary Hairstylist Guido Palau’s Secrets to Getting Through Fashion Month

Rachel Adler

When it comes to master hairstylists, one name comes to the front of the pack: Guido Palau. He’s the man behind the now-iconic Alexander Wang side-braid (and every single hairstyle seen at Wang since then), the even more iconic George Michael “Freedom ’90” video (yep!), and countless magazine covers and spreads that have become the stuff of beauty legend.

Basically, if there’s a hair trend that exists, Palau was most likely behind it. Considering he’s the global creative director of Redken and travels to every single fashion week during fashion month, we had to find out what gets him through show after show.

The snack I pack:
“Maybe a green juice or a healthy snack for backstage.”

My go-to drink during the day:
“A cup of PG Tips tea with a dash of milk.”

The workout I try to fit in:
“I meditate daily, and I go to spin class when I can.”

The shoes I wear all week:
Raf Simons trainers.”

The beauty product I always keep in my own bag:
Redken Move Ability 05.”

The one thing I’ll never eat during fashion week:

The best people to follow on Instagram during fashion week:
“Me! It’s @guidopalau. And Redken: @Redken5thAve.”

My best tip for traveling light:
“Pack only what you need.”

The music I listen to backstage on repeat:
“Anything by Rhye or The xx.”

My trick to actually getting sleep on all those long flights:
“Grab the best seat on the plane. :)”

The best part of fashion week:
“Seeing all the girls I’ve worked with over the years.”

My favorite models to work on or see:
“It’s always good to see Kate Moss, Raquel Zimmermann, and Naomi Campbell, just to name a few.”

The product I can’t wait to work with this season:
Redken’s new Glow Dry Style-Enhancing Blow-Dry Lotion and Triple Take 32 Extreme High-Hold Hairspray.”

The worst part of fashion week is:
“All the air-kissing!”
