The Best Ways to Wear Fragrance in Warm Weather

It’s hard enough to find a signature fragrance, but when steamy weather forces us to chill on the perfume, that’s another challenge entirely. What was once the perfect scent can easily become heavy and cloying in the summertime, which is surely a disappoint, but it doesn’t mean we need to abandon fragrance entirely. With these options, you’ll never be found fragrance-free—or overly fragranced.

Lotion
Lightweight, skin-softening, and easy to apply (and reapply!), scented body lotions are a great way to wear fragrance without overwhelming those around you—or you, for that matter. We love light floral or citrusy scents for summer, as they lend a hint of scent that’s only detectable at close range. Better still, choose a lotion that offers additional sun protection, too: Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen is one of our favorite choices, as it’s naturally scented with apple, mandarin, and lemon extracts.

Oils
Fragrance oils are ideal for warm weather, as they’re totally weightless, absorb quickly, and stay close to the skin, leaving you pleasantly scented but in a way that seems natural, not like you’ve just walked through a cloud of perfume (not that there’s anything wrong with that). You can find single-note oils at most health food stores, which have the added benefit of being natural, or you can opt for something more complex, like Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Pure Perfume Oil, a warm, soft blend formulated with violet, sandalwood, and vanilla.

Body Mists
We get it: The idea of body mists recalls the kind of sickeningly sweet, overpowering spritzes we purchased at the mall back in the day, but times have changed. Body mists aren’t just a good way to wear fragrance, they’re also refreshing to use, and while they tend to fade fast, that means it’s difficult to go overboard. Le Couvent des Minimes Eau des Missions Botanical Fragrance is a “fragrant water” that’s warm, wearable, and perfect for summer.

Layering
If long-lasting, subtle but noticeable scent is what you’re after, layering is the key. Start with scented shower gel, then follow up with a scented body lotion for soft, nourished skin that smells amazing all day long. You can mix and match fragrances for a custom scent or use products from the same line head to toe—we love everything from the Laura Mercier Tarte au Citron collection. The lightweight formulas are just as delightful as the sweet, indulgent lemon scent.
