As we segue from summer into fall, we’re more than ready to embrace new shades, tones, and looks to reflect the changing seasons. Fall 2014 lipstick colors are looking deeper and darker, with bold reds, sexy neutrals, and rich brights that offer intense tone and depth. Grab a pen and take notes—we’ll share what else to look forward to this season!

Flaunt your gem tones.
This fall, it’s all about strong jewel tones on the lips. Notes of cranberry, grape, and cabernet are the perfect way to upgrade your summer go-tos to more seasonally appropriate shades, says Annie Tevelin, makeup artist and founder of SkinOwl. Keep your brights at bay (just for a few months!) and replace them with rich, earthy hues that mimic your favorite berry tones. Craving a softer look for daytime? Snag these colors in a balm or gloss to keep the look light and fresh.

Don’t be afraid of the dark.
Deep, vampy lips have proved to be a recurring fall trend for the past several years, so there’s no reason to shy away—now’s the time to try something new and step outside your comfort zone to rock a dark shade that will turn heads. “One of my favorites is NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Transylvania. It’s a dark plum that is not for the faint of heart,” says Miranda Mendoza of When working with dark shades, be sure to prep the lips with liner before application, as darker colors tend to be trickier to apply correctly.

Metallics are so this year.
This year, we’re also seeing a surprising rise in the popularity of metallic lips, says Mendoza. Although the trend may sound daunting (and dated), choosing more wearable shades like super-flattering berries will help to tone down the effect. A good choice for dabbling in this trend: Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Berry Rose. The cool berry shade will compliment a range of skin tones while the shiny metallic finish will make an on-trend statement. Since this finish tends to call attention to texture, be sure to exfoliate and moisturize before rocking a metallic lip.

Try a nude on for size.
Nude lips are timeless rather than trendy, but they’re also everywhere this fall, says Marissa Waller, founder of all-natural online beauty retailer BeauTeaBar. Grab your favorite nude shade for an everyday elegant clean lip look, when you’re just not feeling up to wearing a bolder lip with aplomb.

Don’t leave the house without your red.
There will never be a replacement for the bold, seductive, powerful red lip, says Waller. “There are two things I look forward to as soon as the calendar hits September every year, and that’s warm, cozy sweaters and unapologetically rocking a bold red lip!,” she says.
