Sugar has a wide variety of uses, most of which involve food that we probably shouldn’t eat but definitely do anyway. In skin care, it acts as a gentle, natural exfoliator that’s perfect for taking the place of other less friendly exfoliants, like those reviled microbeads. Because we can all can find it in our kitchens, or at least at the grocery store, DIY sugar beauty recipes are among the most accessible to make. These five simple recipes will give you beautiful skin, and even feet—and you can forget about the crash.
Honey Lemon Sugar Scrub
2 cups of raw sugar
3 tablespoons of honey
2 tablespoons of coconut oil (or your oil of choice)
1 lemon, juiced
Honey, lemon, sugar—this gentle body scrub contains everything you need to exfoliate and hydrate skin without irritation, so it’s perfect for dry, sensitive skin. It’s super simple to make: All you really need to do is combine the ingredients in a bowl and mix well with a spoon until the components are blended. You can add more coconut oil or more honey to your liking for even more moisture.
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of honey
1 lemon, juiced
The sugar waxing method is much gentler and kinder to sensitive skin, even on the face, than traditional wax formulas, and better still, it’s budget-friendly, too. Combine the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer until the sugar has crystallized, stirring with a spoon to make sure the grains of sugar dissolve. Once the mixture has thickened and turned to a darker brown, turn off the heat and let it cool until it’s no longer boiling hot. You can even save the leftover formula in the fridge once you’ve finished your waxing job—a quick 10 seconds in the microwave will melt it back down to a usable consistency.
Brown Sugar Scrub
2 cups of brown sugar
1/2 cup of olive oil
1/4 cup of honey
This recipe is pretty basic, so if you want to add your own ingredients to your liking, like coconut oil or coffee grounds, feel free to do so. All the preparation that’s required is mixing the ingredients in a bowl, then you’re good to go! Just be careful when using this scrub in the shower—olive oil tends to make the tub a bit slippery.
Peppermint Foot Scrub
1 cup of granulated sugar
2 tablespoons of coconut oil
5-10 drops of peppermint essential oil
This minty scrub is perfect for refreshing dry, scaly feet just in time for sandals season. Simply mix your oil into the sugar until the consistency is moist, but slightly grainy, and then add in your essential oil. You can use this scrub in the shower or bath, or use it on dry skin before wiping off with a dry towel to leave some of the moisturizing oils behind.
Blueberry Face Scrub
2 tablespoons of honey
1/3 cup of fresh blueberries
1 teaspoon of finely granulated sugar
Antioxidants from blueberries and anti-inflammatory properties from honey make this scrub a great pick for all skin types, including the sensitive and blemish-prone. Start by mashing your blueberries with a fork before blending in the honey and sugar. For application, smooth the mixture onto skin and leave on for as long as desired, then rinse with lukewarm water in gentle circular motions.
