Last night’s VMAs brought amazing performances, presidential announcements and jaw-dropping moments (Google Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus‘ on-stage spar). But the biggest makeup trend of the night? Dramatic cat eyes. From smoky to sharp, wings were definitely the thing for MTV. Here are the 9 stars who rocked the liquid liner perfectly last night.
Nicki Minaj kept her cat eye liner limited to the top lid only. Along with her thick bangs, this creates a gorgeous, dramatic frame for her face.
Taylor Swift went with a very defined gunmetal gray cat eye that was darker at the inner corners and lighter at the center. This shimmery color is perfect with her light blue eyes.
Hailee Steinfeld‘s wings are long, extending almost to the outer corners of her (perfect) brows. She also extended her liner about a third of the way beneath her lower lashline for balance and added definition.
Kat Graham paired her thin, elongated cat eye with seriously shimmery bronze and aubergine eyeshadow. Add some immaculately sculpted eyebrows into the mix, and you have one of the strongest makeup looks of the night.
Demi Lovato paired her very angular, upswept cat eye with lots of mascara on her lower lashes and—interestingly—a subtle line of peachy-pink shimmery shadow underneath. This coordinates perfectly with her amazing pink blush and radiant highlight.
All hail Queen Britney Spears, who added gold glitter shadow to her intensely defined cat eye.
Lily Aldridge added spiky, ’60s-style lashes to her rounded, elongated cat eye for retro-inspired glamour that softens and balances a very sharply contoured cheek.
Rita Ora schools us in exactly how a smoky cat eye should be done: soft black eyeshadow takes the place of harsh eyeliner, and is blended with browns and grays for a totally major look that complements her amazing skin and platinum hair.
Emily Ratajkowski smudged her exceptionally dark liner with a touch of brown matte shadow to add a smoky, sexy touch to her angular, feline look.
