It was just a few years back that we were terrified to let oil anywhere near our faces due to mortal fear of breakouts, but we’ve come a long, long way since then. Now, our skin care routines—and our hair and body care regimens too—are incomplete without them, especially during the winter, when the best way to keep skin hydrated is to lay it on thick.
As far as we’re concerned, these 10 oils, from facial cleansing oils to frizz-taming hair formulas, are the only ones you need to know about to get you through the chillier seasons.
Shu Uemura Limited Edition Maison Kitsuné Ultime8 Cleansing Oil ($42)
The OG cult fave cleansing oil gets a chic update with this new limited-edition packaging, but what’s inside is the same—and just as good—as it’s been since its inception in 1967. It’s the one-step wonder of the cleansing world: A handful of oil will remove all makeup, rinse away impurities, and leave skin feeling soft and looking radiant. It’s addictive.
Arcona Wine Oil ($58)
We’ll happily buy into almost anything that sounds like there might be wine involved, but you don’t have to be a wino to love this concentrated reparative formula, which uses the popular antioxidant resveratrol to treat and prevent any and all signs of aging. Inflammation, dryness, dullness, a general sense of blah—none of it stands a chance against this deeply nourishing oil.
Tarte Limited-Edition Maracuja Oil ($48)
So you could purchase the very same oil in the original packaging, or you can purchase a bling-encrusted bottle (shown at the top of the page) just in time for the holidays; that’s all up to you. Whichever you choose, you’ll find inside a skin-firming oil that’s rich in fatty acids and vitamin C, for all your hydrating and brightening needs. Plus, because it’s straight-up oil with no additives, you can use it to tame flyaways, condition your split ends, soften your cuticles—really, whatever you please.
L’Oréal Age Perfect Cell Renewal Facial Oil ($24.99)
We did our research, and it seems like nobody on the Internet has a bad thing to say about this affordable choice. Just under $25 and universally beloved? Sign. Us. Up. It’s super lightweight, nonirritating, and a pleasure to apply thanks to its weightless texture. It uses several plant oils—like olive, jojoba, sunflower seed, lavender, cucumber, and more—to strengthen the skin and encourage cell production.
Marisa Berenson Sublime Care Fabulous Oil ($100, available online in late December)
Fabulous, indeed. This luxurious “elixir,” housed in a very elegant gold bottle, is full of organic prickly pear oil, the star ingredient of the line. It’s rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 and -6, which helps to regenerate skin and just kind of make everything look a little … better. Sandalwood, geranium, and lavender soothe and restore tired, lackluster skin, and it absorbs so easily it’s almost like a dry oil. Oh, and it was created by a bona fide ’70s It-girl.
Juara Radiance Vitality Oil ($65)
Exceptionally useful for all skin types, this silky-feeling oil goes on smooth to promote elasticity, boost radiance, and address countless signs of aging. It’s especially nice for very dry or aging skin that needs a multitasking formula that goes above and beyond. With plumeria, passion fruit, coconut, macadamia, and avocado oils among its list of pure ingredients, you’ll notice a visible difference—better hydration and a brighter, clearer look—after just a few uses.
Caudalíe Divine Oil ($49)
A longtime top pick of every beauty fanatic we can think of (ourselves included), this luxurious dry oil isn’t only a hit because of its hydrating, glow-inducing formula—it’s also one of the best-smelling products we’ve ever tried. The woody, floral fragrance is dreamy and intoxicating but subtle enough that it doesn’t shout “perfume!” And it leaves skin looking immediately dewier and more nourished. Bonus points: You can use it from head to toe.
Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Oil ($25.50)
The very, very sensitive-skinned need love too: This incredibly gentle formula is unlike anything we’ve ever tried, insofar as you can use it pretty much anywhere to soothe dryness and other general skin breakouts. It strengthens the skin with lightweight oils of plum seed and blackthorn, but it’s the calming almond oil that really quells reactivity and turns flaky patches smooth again.
L’Occitane Shea Butter Fabulous Oil ($36)
Another one we use for just about everything: This shea oil–based dry oil, intended for hair and body, is your ticket to soft, well-moisturized, but totally nongreasy skin, and silky, glossy hair with a lovely fragrance that, like all things L’Occitane, smells expensive and inherently French. Basically, a winner all-around.
Alterna Bamboo Smooth Pure Kendi Treatment Oil ($25)
For anyone and everyone interested in hair that’s deeply hydrated, immune to frizz, and so shiny it’s stupid, this delightfully lightweight, vitamin-rich oil is perfect for whipping disobedient strands into shape just like that. If you’re a victim of staticky, flyaway hair in the winter, you’ll want to toss this travel-friendly bottle into your purse for perfect control that lasts all day.
