No, you’re not imagining it: That is indeed dreaded humidity in the air you’re feeling as summer quickly approaches. You’re probably starting to hate your creams and moisturizers that can make skin feel heavy this time of year. And rightfully so—there’s a fine line between dewy and greasy, and oftentimes the products that worked best during the cooler months are suddenly to blame for your oil-slicked skin.

But that doesn’t mean you should quit moisturizing during the warmer months; your skin may actually overcompensate and produce excess oil. Luckily, a new guard of gel-based moisturizers (taking the form of everything from rollerball eye products to gel-based mists) offers some of the same benefits as your staple creams but in a way that won’t overwhelm your skin.

“A gel-based product allows for more breathability and less occlusion of skin,” says Dr. Rachel Nazarian of Schweiger Dermatology Group. “Using a thinner gel product rather than a heavier cream or lotion will result in quicker absorption of the product, making it an ideal choice when the temperature and humidity start to rise.”

Some of the newer gel-based products contain active ingredients that actually impart an instant cooling sensation, while others tend to blend much better under makeup because of their lightweight consistency and the fact that they’re most often colorless. Some companies are even taking it one step further and making gel-based mists, which claim to be even less sticky and more moisturizing than the traditional ones.
